We are building a new underground natural gas storage facility to support Nova Scotia's growing demand for dependable, clean, and affordable energy year-round. Every day, natural gas fuels many of the province’s major industries, the majority of universities, public institutions like hospitals and schools, and thousands of homes. The storage facility can also support natural gas customers in other Maritime provinces as well as New England.
The Alton facility will consist of:
- engineered, underground salt caverns to safely store natural gas
- a natural gas pipeline linking the caverns to the North American natural gas supply network
- water and brine management facilities for the cavern construction phase, including water pipelines from the caverns to the project’s site on the tidal Shubenacadie River estuary
