Our utilities provide customers with a secure source of energy and our shareholders with regulated returns.

A thorough understanding of the regulatory environments in which we operate is key to our strategy for growing our utilities. This understanding allows us to deliver value through long-life infrastructure that is underpinned by regulated returns and cost-of-service recovery. We work with our customers and regulators to deliver natural gas in a safe and reliable way, and deliver a fair return for our shareholders.

AltaGas owns and operates utility assets that deliver natural gas to end-users in Alberta, British Columbia, and Nova Scotia. The Utility business serves more than 115,000 customers and has a rate base of approximately $500 million. With the pending acquisition of SEMCO, we will see our Utility business grow to more than $1.2 billion of rate base and over half a million customers.

In 2011, we completed multi-year rate applications for AUI and Heritage Gas. Heritage Gas’ negotiated settlement was approved by the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board in November. The PNG acquisition received regulatory approval in record time, increasing AltaGas’ rate base and customers by more than 50 percent.
