Power Generation

Our Business:

The Power Generation segment is primarily engaged in the sale of electricity and ancillary services to the Alberta wholesale market. From the dispatch and sale of power from the coal-fired Sundance plant west of Edmonton and gas-fired peaking capacity facilities throughout southern Alberta, AltaGas’ 378 MW of power capacity serve approximately five percent of the province's power demand.

Our Power Generation business is positioned to benefit from the rising North American demand for cleaner energy sources. We have a solid portfolio of power purchase agreements (PPAs) and gas-fired peaking assets that drive stable, predictable cash flow. In addition, we have expanded our portfolio into renewable energy with a number of wind and run-of-river power projects under development or construction. These renewable projects are backstopped by long-term contracts extending up to 40 years.

A look at AltaGas’ Power Generation segment:

  • Supplies approximately five per cent of Alberta's total power demand
  • PPAs for 353 MW of low-cost Alberta power generation that expire in 2020
  • 25 MW of gas-fired peaking assets for backstopping and fuel diversity, with an additional 14.4 MW under construction
  • Committed to developing wind power assets across Canada and the northwestern United States through a number of partners and projects such as the Bear Mountain Wind Park near Dawson Creek, British Columbia which began construction in December 2007
  • Interests in a number of run-of-river hydroelectric developments planned or under construction in British Columbia
  • Integrates with other AltaGas business segments by supplying Extraction and Transmission, Field Gathering and Processing and Energy Services customers with power
