Reporting to the Manager Environment – Hydro, the Environmental Lead will play an integral role in planning, designing and implementing the environmental construction and monitoring program for the Northwest Projects. This position will be project based at the Northwest Projects site (Forrest Kerr) and will be required to work on site on a rotational schedule.

Responsibilities for the position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Works directly with the Manager Environment - Hydro to ensure the project’s environmental commitments are implemented
  • Supervises the on-site environmental coordinator(s)
  • Works directly with and supports the on-site safety programs and environmental protection
  • Develops environmental management systems, programs and procedures
  • Ensures the project is in compliance with regulatory and policy requirements
  • Determines and obtains regulatory approvals, licenses and permits
  • Monitors the reporting and data gathering of compliance items
  • Ensures all reporting and data gathering is in accordance with regulatory requirements and is reported to regulatory agencies and First Nations
  • Develops and implements mitigation monitoring programs
  • Participates as a key member of the Environmental Performance Committee, representing AltaGas Ltd.
  • Oversees all aspects of the environmental operations
  • Ensures training and resources are provided to all project personnel with respect to company policies, standards and procedures
  • Develops and implements the environmental policies and best practices
  • Ensures that the corporate environmental guidelines are implemented and maintained
  • Provides leadership in the implementation and administration of the Environmental Management System
  • Develops and implements the environmental audit program
  • Analyzes environmental reporting and stewards improvement areas
  • Ensures all required environmental internal reporting and regulatory reporting is complete
  • Promotes awareness in environmental protection and outlines emergency response actions
  • Provides strong communications between government agencies, local communities and First Nations

Qualifications:

  • University Degree or Technical College Degree, in Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry or similar discipline
  • Hydroelectric specific degree, courses or tickets is an asset
  • CSTS, PST, WHIMIS and First Aid Certificates
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience specific to Hydroelectric projects and/or environmental  is an asset
  • Ability to develop strong relationships
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to respond effectively in emergency situations
  • Experience determining and obtaining permits
  • Experience in creating environmental policies that are in accordance with provincial and company standards
  • Experience working with First Nations is an asset
